Techsylvania delivers all the techies a unique opportunity to learn from some of the brightest minds’ do’s & don’ts. From presenting ground-breaking ideas to debating some of the most pivotal problems that arise when business meets tech, the event has a time-tested ability to represent the core of the community movement.

Each year, renowned professionals have stepped on the main stage of Techsylvania to spark ideas and passions among our tech community, by using their most fierce weapons: their knowledge and expertise.

In 2021, Techsylvania brings it all to the next level, focusing on exploring today — how to spot and create opportunities in a not-so-favorable environment, in order to innovate tomorrow. Let’s see how the software industry made it through the last year and how big the technology and investments plans are for the future, through the lens of Valentin Filip, Managing Director Product Investments at Fortech.

Innovations and suitable technology solutions for the software industry in 2021

Innovation is required in all domains of activity, including in software services.

“We pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the changing environment and the new context created by Covid, both internally and in the relationship with our customers. Even before going public with our investment efforts, we’ve started investing in tools and processes that digitize and optimize our workflow, thus creating a flexible approach in everything we do. A few examples are office management tools, business management suite, client management tools, etc. We’re looking forward to supporting start-ups that help businesses like ours perform better, and possibly becoming customers of theirs ourselves.” states Valentin Filip — Managing Director Product Investments.

Investments plans. A bolder approach to broaden the suite of tailored services developed under the Fortech Group

Having a solid business to rely on, Fortech, through its newly-established division Fortech Investments can reinvest its gains in new directions, creating more value in the market. This year marks the official commitment to growing new areas of interest, such as niche technologies product investments, and capability expansion through M&A. “We envision expanding the range of partnerships by leveraging these directions and also by combining the lessons and learnings from all of them.” added Valentin Filip.

Fortech Investments comes in to provide entrepreneurs and start-ups with the right resources, at the right time

Innovation spurs from technological advances and personal or business needs. Fortech Investments supports start-ups that seize the 3 most important market forces that create opportunity: Economical forces, Social forces, Technological forces.

“We see a great confluence of positive forces in different domains, such as Healthcare, Finance, Education, Transportation, Manufacturing, and are expecting to see a lot of start-ups for which the right moment is now.” (Valentin Filip — Managing Director Product Investments)

Investing in Telios, becoming the lead and largest investor to date, with a €400000 ticket

Valentin says that “while being focused on the directions we want to invest, we also leave some flexibility in our approach.”

This has enabled investments in the B2C sector with RacketPal, a UK startup, and Licenseware in the software asset management for companies.

“Our latest contribution is to Telios, becoming the lead and largest investor to date, with a €400000 ticket. We are eager to support both local and foreign start-ups, with the aim to bridge the gap between different levels of sophistication and market maturity,” he concluded.

Since Wolfpack Digital is the Techsylvania’s Silver Partner this year, we decided to sit down with founder and CEO Georgina Lupu for an interview. Let’s see the story behind the brand, what it means to work with Wolfpack Digital and their plans for the future.
Georgina Lupu Florian — She-Wolf, Founder and CEO at Wolfpack Digital

What is the story behind Wolfpack Digital?

Wolfpack Digital started off as a full-service digital product agency in early 2015. The company started from a deep passion for digital products. I wanted to bring together my interests and skills in IT, psychology, PR, design and business management, after returning from London, where I studied in a Master’s in Business Management and later worked as lead iOS developer for a wearable tech company creating smart fashion jewellery.
The name of the company stems from my surname, which means “Wolf”, and as a team, we do our best to embody the values associated to this powerful symbol: loyalty, teamwork, dedication and a strong orientation towards results.

What is your mission?

As one of the top development companies according to Clutch, we are here to build versatile web and mobile apps using optimal technologies, so as to ensure the best delivery of the digital product from start to end: from defining product strategy to design, development, testing, and launch.

We must say we prefer native technologies for mobile applications, and Ruby on Rails and all the cool new flavors of Javascript for web applications.

The people of Wolfpack Digital are more than builders, we are strategists too, having worked with more than 40 startups so far, and successfully being part of their journey to becoming scaleups. We have product experts onboard who have lead products on their successful business paths. Our B2B and B2C clients and partners are from all over the world and are part of industries such as healthtech, fintech, IoT, transportation, entertainment, etc. Some of them
have evolved to million-dollar companies.

The pack of “skilfull wolves” always ready to build powerful digital products start-to-end

This year our work has been rewarded by some notable mentions and successful journeys. The top highlight was being one of the winners of an accelerator with Pamble, one of our internal projects, and being mentioned in Forbes magazine. Another accomplishment which we are really happy about is being amongst Top Strongest IT Employers in Cluj-Napoca according to Brainspotting.

This is a short tour of our company, nothing special, just a pack of wolves in their natural habitat and a cosy office. Our doors are always opened for visitors. Don’t want to give you any spoilers but it happens very often that we have goodies and healthy snacks around. Let us know if you want to give us a visit.

Take us through the steps you follow when starting a new project like an iOS app, Android app or a web app. Does this method ensure success?

At Wolfpack Digital, we start by learning as much as possible about our customer’s business needs and priorities. In this phase, we also advise our client with respect to product strategy, we commit together to an action plan, and document the specs. We afterwards choose the best technology stack so as to build the initial product both scalable and fast. We begin by creating
the wireframes, which are in fact black and white block-schemes of the application depicting all possible flows, content, and component types. We iterate together with the customer who is highly involved in this process until we reach an approved version.

People behind the apps — Wolfpack Digital team in action

We go to the next phase afterwards, where we focus on the UX/UI design of the app and iterate efficiently until the approved version is brought into the world. Usually, a number of 3 iterations is enough using our approach. Next, the fun starts with the actual coding, after which we perform thorough testing and move through a loop of testing-adjusting to launch a flawless and stunningly beautiful and friendly product to the market.

This method is definitely a successful one and one we have used repeatedly with great results. By using this phased approach and combining it with an Agile way of working (we work in 1-week sprints), resources are used as efficiently as possible with the best results. All these processes are tailored so as to follow the lean startup methodology, which we are very fond of
when dealing with a new or young product.

What are your future plans at Wolfpack Digital? Any interesting projects coming up?

Our team is at a moment in life when our focus is divided in two: continuing to partner up with companies to help manage and build their products, and creating our own products. This second scope is materialized by Wolfpack Digital Labs, our newly created startup division.

We believe it’s time for Romanian IT companies to gradually expand towards building our own tech solutions since there is important progress in the ecosystem regarding business knowledge in the past years.

The local community understands marketing, business, and strategy much better, with some notable successful examples of Romanian ventures available. This also adds to the dimension of sustainability.

Our in-house startup division — Wolfpack Digital Labs

We believe in investing and growing truly meaningful products at Wolfpack Digital Labs. Most of the products we are working on come from the healthtech and greentech industry.

We built the first mindfulness app in Romanian, knowing that mental health is an essential topic and listening to meditation recordings in one’s native language has a tremendous impact on the efficiency of the session.

We have also recently won an accelerator competition with a healthtechapplication dealing with gambling addiction treatment and responsible gambling education called Pamble.

Another rewarding project we are currently working on, which is a cross-collaboration between several entities and companies here in Cluj-Napoca, is RainDrops, a greentech solution bringing nature closer to home and office, by offering a slick-designed smart flower pot. In this IoT project, we cover mobile and web application development, and we will be using machine learning to offer even better user experience after launch. These times couldn’t be more exciting for Wolfpack Digital.
